Sicilian Pupi
Sicilian “Puppi” are part of a vast tradition of rod puppets in Europe, developed particularly in Sicily, namely in Palermo and Catania. “Puppi” shows are called “opra” and its stories are based on cavalry romances, where Orlando, Charlemagne’s knight-errant fights demons and dragons in the war against Moors.
These Puppets’ heads have a central rod. Rotating this rod on its edge, the head moves to the left or to the right. The most energetic rotation moves are transmitted to the chest, and through it, to the legs.
