The play Love of Don Perlimplin … was adapted with the objective of recreating Lorca's original conception for the show, inspired by the Alleluia Theatre of his childhood and at the same time to celebrate this poet, accused of immorality, betrayed by his friends and killed by Franco's political police.
For the first time in Portugal, this play was produced with part of the score that Federico created for his show, and that it was possible to put together thanks to the work of Gustavo Pitaluga of collecting, along with the poet sisters, Concha and Isabel.
Don Perlimplín, lord of many lands, geese and sheep, assumes the character of a ridiculous old man with such a pure soul, as virginal as a child’s. He gets old without ever knowing life. He finds love in a marriage imposed by his maid, Marcolfa (his mother’s alter-ego). An unknown world opens before his eyes, full of secrets and hidden things. Don Perlimplín, frightened, between pleasure and fear, gives his first step of initiation in the mystery of love.
Belisa is a fine animal, with no soul, who sleeps with the five races on hearth. After the wedding night, Dom Perlimplín wakes up cruelly adorned with a pair of golden flourished horns. The ritual is over. Don Perlimplín was initiated in the cruelty of love, but at the same time he reaches the point of the dramatic hero and the revenge starts…
The puppets are sculptured in wood, drowned and conceived like truly art pieces, since their clothes until the conception of their mechanisms. This show develops in two contiguous platforms, the puppets anatomically carved in wood exhibit in front of us their pain, the laughter, and the commotion of an existence dreamed; an universe with sprites and others characters, animated by complex string mechanisms, defying us in the confront with other laws and spaces.
Victim of apparent intrigues inexplicable losses of successive manuscripts; persecuted by the police and held for years accused of immorality; published in the shadow of this poets greatest works, Love of Don Perlimplin … is without a doubt a key work in the production of Lorca.
