“(…) the puppets frozen in their stasis in these décors, are only ameans to the end which is the film itself. They, or any objects, are in aconstant flux and the collective movement is of the utter essence. The”Dormitorium” therefore sleeps, but only in this exhibition. However in thefilms they are “liberated” from their stasis. That is not only theirtemporary life but also their dream so to speak.”
The Quay Brothers
With a fantastic and bizarre imagination, the twin brothers Timothy e Stephen Quay are among the most original and important puppeteers of the last decades. They created a dark and surreal universe that has been praised by all. They are expert puppeteers, give the puppets an individualised treatment like no other in the history of cinema, and they create abstract, personal and unforgettable universes.
The exhibition “Dormitorium – Quay Brothers Film Sets” brings to the Museu da Marioneta, in Lisbon an extensive collection of sets and puppets created by the British Quay brothers for their films and for some plays and operas. It is an unique opportunity to see in first hand the secrets of a fascinating and disturbing work that conveys childhood memories filtered by a very particular sensibility. A journey to such important films as “Street of Crocodiles” or “The PianoTuner of EarthQuakes”, within an imaginary world that combines Lewis Carrol with Luis Buñuel, Franz Kafka and Jan Svankmajer.
An exhibition that sheds light into the shadows of an unique work in the history of film, “Dormitorium” has been applauded and received in awe in some of the major European cities, and is now brought to Portugal thanks to the joint efforts of EGEAC/Museu da Marioneta and of two Festivals dedicated to the universe of animation and puppetry: the Monstra – Festival de Animação de Lisboa and the FIMFA Lx – Festival Internacional de Marionetas e Formas Animadas.
