Ito-Ayatsuri is a traditional Japanese art that refers to the technique of string puppets. Ito means string, Ayatsuri manipulation. This technique has some similarities with the West, but also quite a few differences. The system to move his head and eyes is inside the puppet, the string controller, Teita, characterized by a unique form especially suited to particular gestures of the Japanese puppet as well as the Japanese dance. In this show, the Japanese company Minomushi presents three short stories in one session: SHITAKIRI-SUZUME | The sparrows with cut tongues(Duration 30min)An ancient Japanese folktale. The sparrows were treated kindly by the old man; they ate the stick from ironing the old women’s clothes. She was so angry that she cut the sparrow’s tongues, which had to flee to the mountain. The old man was sad and went to the mountain, where the sparrows happily received him, inviting him to dance and eat at their home. Before returning home, they gave him a gift: “Which would you prefer? A large or a small Wicker?” and the good old man chose the small. At home he opened it and out came gold. The greedy old woman went to the sparrow’s house to win the big wicker and on the way back she met monsters and strange things Nipponese and had a hard time.SHISHIMAI | The lions dance(Duration 10min)Shishimai ceremony is a traditional lion dance with two people. A person holds a lion mask made of wood. This dance is followed by bamboo flutes and drums. It was represented as a prayer for the safety of home and a good harvest. At the end of the dance the lion bites the heads of some viewers to bring luck. The Minomushi recreates this ceremony with their puppets.NORIOURETA SALARÎMAN | A Man in Suit and Tie loses the Last Train(Duration 15min)This piece shows us a typical Japanese official which gets drunk after a day's work.
